Altijd leuk: wandelen door Amsterdam. Je komt van alles tegen. Dit keer The Grim Reaper op het Rokin. Misschien is de rugafbeelding een verwijzing naar de man zijn rookverslaving? Of is dit een handige manier om vragende toeristen of bedelaars van je weg te houden?
The Dutch writer Harry Mulisch died of cancer last Saturday. It was in the news on Sunday, so the front page of ‘Het Parool’ had a big picture of the writer on its front-page. I can’t say that I was a particular fan of Mulisch’s writing, but he is considered to be one of the greatest writers in the Dutch language. Also by himself, he wasn’t known for having a small ego, that’s for sure. But I’ll take people’s word for it when it comes to his writing skills. Still, I thought it was a nice gesture of the paper to put the portrait of Mulisch this big on the front page.

That’s one very dead pigeon. I think it got run over by a car. I don’t particularly like pigeons actually. There are a lot of sick ones in the city, carrying deceases and such. Still, this one looks very sad, being squashed and all.

Yesterday, on my way to the train I encountered a bus with an advertisement for a funeral home. Their site: Hetafscheidvanjeleven.nl. (The biggest goodbye of your life). A clever but rather distasteful slogan if you ask me. It’s not a bus-ride I am looking forward to, that’s for sure.
